Love me some Thursday night MACtion. Looking at the numbers, Akron put together a solid performance as they bounced back from a 41-0 shellacking by Western Michigan two weeks ago. The Zips rallied from a 17-7 halftime deficit by outscoring a descent Ball State team 28-8 after intermission. Akron held a 529-443 edge in total yards despite losing the first down battle 28-26 in the game. Each team committed one turnover in the contest while Ball State held a narrow 30:26 to 29:34 advantage in total yards in the game. Three straight touchdowns in the third and early fourth quarter gave the Zips a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Moving the ball so effectively against a good Ball State team showed that Akron has some fire power under the offensive hood.
Buffalo bottomed out last week as they were stream rolled by a mediocre Northern Illinois team that had only one win coming in. The Bulls scored early in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 10-7 before allowing the final 34 points of the game. Buffalo lost the total yardage battle by a 511-338 margin and allowed 28 first downs while recording 20 of their own. The Bulls did hold a 31:08 to 28:52 edge in time of possession in the game. Buffalo was hurt by four turnovers in the game while forcing just one takeaway.
This one is a matchup of teams going in opposite directions right now. Akron comes into Buffalo as the heavy favorite on Thursday night. If Akron can establish the run game early and often by controlling the clock, this game will be over by halftime. The Bulls were outplayed by an elusive scrambling quarterback in the last game, and Akron’s Thomas Woodson has the same ability to escape the pocket and make plays with his legs. I don’t expect Buffalo to put up much of a fight as they’re already looking ahead to the offseason. The Zips are playing well at the moment while the Bulls are dreadful on both sides of the ball. Even playing at home hasn’t really worked in the favor of the Bulls. This isn’t the same team that had guys like James Starks, Branden Oliver or Khalil Mack doing damage. Buffalo is flat right now and the Zips are flying. Akron continues their strong run with a convincing road victory.
