Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays Prediction provided by Oddsboard.com
Boston Red Sox
Starting Pitcher: Rick Porcello (8-2, 3.93 ERA)
The Red Sox are reeling a bit after facing some tough AL competition. Boston is 4-10 over a ten game span and are at trying to avoid losing three straight series after losing game 1 vs the Rays.
Boston gives Rick Porcello the ball tonight. Porcello’s numbers have continued to worsen following an impressive April in which he went 5-0 with a 2.76 ERA in five starts. Since then, Porcello went 2-2 (4.65 ERA) in May and 1-0 with a 4.45 ERA this month. In his most recent start, Porcello allowed four earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of an 8-7 win over the White Sox on June 23.
The Red Sox sit in 2nd place in the American League East but their pitching and hitting have been sporadic. Boston’s pitching was dreadful in a 13-7 defeat at Tropicana Field on Monday. One positive is that the Red Sox are 6-1 in its last seven games against the Rays when Chris Archer is the starter.
Tampa Bay Rays
Starting Pitcher: Chris Archer (4-10, 4.70 ERA)
Not much is going Chris Archer’s way this season. He is 4-10 with a 4.70 ERA. He’s picked up a loss in each of his past three starts, which includes the 6-1 loss to Cleveland on June 22, wherein Archer allowed four earned runs on six hits in six innings of action. One of Tampa Bay’s many problems is their bullpen which is 24th in the majors with a 4.33 ERA and owns the third-highest home-run-per-nine-innings ratio with 1.92.
If Tampa Bay can capitalize on poor pitching from Porcello in early innings it will be to their advantage. Porcello has been bad in the early innings, as he has a 4.20 ERA in first innings, 3.60 ERA in second innings, and 6.00 ERA in third innings.
Tampa Bay is just 1-9 their last 10 games but did manage to win Monday night’s series opener vs the Sox.
Red Sox vs Rays Prediction
David Ortiz is 11 for 29 with two home runs against Rays starter Chris Archer, while Mookie Betts is 3 for 12 and also has two home runs and Xander Bogaerts is 6 for 16. The Rays are really struggling, losing ten consecutive games heading into Monday’s action as they are dealign with a plethora of injuries as Steven Souza Jr., Steve Pearce, Kevin Kermaier, and Brandon Guyer are all on the DL.
The Boston Red Sox are:
- 6-1 in Porcello’s last 7 starts in game 2 of a series.
- 4-1 in Porcello’ s last 5 starts against the Rays.
- 4-1 in their last road 5 games against a right handed starter.
The Tampa Bay Rays are:
- 1-6 in Archer’s last 7 starts.
- 1-10 in their last 11 games against a right handed starter.
- 1-6 in Archer’s last 7 starts against the Red Sox.
Taking the Red Sox in this one. Archer struggles against Boston, allowing six runs against them earlier this season and has a 1-7 record with a 5.67 ERA in his career against the Red Sox. Porcello had a 2.67 ERA against Tampa last season, and was solid in his start against them earlier this season so feeling confident he can limit the damage to the Rays offense and lead his team to victory.
Pick: Boston Red Sox -105
