Central Michigan vs Tulsa Game Preview
Marlins Park is the host to the 2016 Miami Beach Bowl featuring the Central Michigan Chippewas vs Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. Oddsmakers have the Chippewas as substantial underdogs in this bowl game considering they enter this matchup winners of just 1 game out of their last 5 and just 4 out of their L10.
The Chippewas struggled at times offensively this season resulting in an average of 27 PPG. Their defense was pretty steady allowing 376 YPG which ranked them 44th in the country. QB Cooper Rush threw for over 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns but his achilles heel was throwing 13 interceptions. The INT’s were momentum killers and his inability to limit mistakes resulted in an offense that sputtered at times.
Tulsa leaned more in RB Devon Spalding towards the end of the year to take the pressure off of Rush. Rush’s top wide receiver target was Corey Willis who caught 68 passes for 1024 yards and 9 touchdowns. A very respectable year for the junior wide out.
While the Chippewas were sinking towards the end of the season the Golden Hurricanes were rising. Tulsa finished the season by winning 5 of their last 6 games and finished 2nd in the American West standings. One might expect this Tulsa team to be in a better bowl game than their matchup with Central Michigan considering their 9 win season. They lost three games all year which included blowout loss to Ohio State, but the other two were a seven-point loss to 13th ranked Houston and a two-point loss to a Navy team who was ranked most of the season.
Tulsa is a fun offensive team to watch as they are a very balanced team. Quarterback Dane Evans threw for over 3000 yards and 27 touchdowns while RB’s James Flanders rushed for 1,529 yards and 17 TD’s with an average of 6.3 a carry, and D’Angelo Brewer rushed for 1,320 with 7 TD’s and a 5.3 average. It may be very hard for Central Michigan to stop this Tula offense.
Dane Evans shared the love this season with his wide outs. If Josh Atkinson has 73 yards receiving in this game he will reach 1000 receiving yards. With this accomplishment, Tulsa will become the first team in FBS history to have a 3,000-yard passer, two 1,000-yard rushers and two 1,000-yard receivers.
Tulsa’s defense wasn’t great this season but when you have a high powered offense your mistakes tend to be covered up. The Golden Hurricanes allowed 432 YPG and 31.5 PPG. Luckily for this defense the Chippewas are not high powered and they should be able to keep them around their average of 27 PPG.
Here are some alarming trends, CMU is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss. Tulsa is 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 games following an ATS loss and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall. There is a reason that a team like CMU has struggled and facing off vs a high powered offense like Tulsa will prove to be very difficult to out score.
Laying -12.5 points may seem like a lot but this should be a two touchdown game, at least, in Tulsa’s favor.
Central Michigan vs Tulsa Miami Beach Bowl Prediction: Tulsa -12.5
