A Pac 12 featured matchup pins the Colorado Buffaloes vs the Stanford Cardinals at Stanford Stadium. Colorado has been one of the surprise teams in the Pac 12 and are one win away from clinching a bowl berth. Stanford was without star RB Christian McCaffrey last week vs Stanford but they managed to win on the road vs Notre Dame. McCaffrey is questionable for Saturday’s game and Stanford’s season is in question after losses to Washington and Washington State.
Colorado doesn’t expose too many weaknesses ranking 22nd in scoring offense (39.0 ppg) and 27th in scoring defense (20.0 ppg). They pose problems for opposing defenses with a two-headed attack at quarterback. Sefo Liufau lead this team past the Sun Devils last weekend and has 1,044 yards at a 72% completion rate, 6 TD’s, no interceptions. Steven Montez has been equally productive. Montez has completed 63% of his attempts for 940 yards, 9 TD’s and three interceptions.
Colorado currently sits in a first-place tie in the Pac-12 South with Utah. Their two losses came at Southern Cal and at Michigan. Colorado has an impressive defense lead by Kenneth Olugbode and Jimmie Gilbert. The Buffs defense concedes, on average, 20 PPG and they head in Stanford as one of the top defenses in the Pac 12 allowing only 312 YPG which ranks them 14th in the nation.
Stanford is hoping Christian McCaffrey is healthy enough to lace them up Saturday. Stanford entered the season as one of the favorites to make the College Football Playoff, but back-to-back blowout losses to Washington and Washington State killed all that noise. Stanford squeaked out a win last weekend over a mediocre Notre Dame team. This offense and special teams are not as dynamic without McCaffrey and this team needs his production in order to make a push towards the postseason.
The Stanford offense is averaging 19 points per game with 146.7 rushing yards and 158.5 passing yards per game. The Stanford defense is giving up 22 points per game with 125.7 rushing yards and 241.3 passing yards per game. Colorado is 5-0 ATS last 5 conference games, 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win and 5-0 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. Stanford is 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game. Let’s face it, this Stanford team is not the same without McCaffrey. I like the Colorado defense and believe this Buffaloes offense will be able to put up points vs Stanford’s D. I like where this Colorado team is headed and believe they have momentum which is why I am taking CU +2 on the road in a SU win.
