A top 25 matchup Wednesday night which features two SEC teams as the Florida Gators take on the South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Florida Gators are rolling into this big SEC conference matchup against South Carolina after winning seven game in a row and fresh off an OT win over Georgia on Saturday. The Gators are (14-3) on the season and leading the way in scoring this year for the Gators is KeVaughn Allen, with 13.9 PPG, Canyon Barry (12.8 PPG) and Devin Robinson (11.4 PPG; 5.1 RPG).
Florida has been successful this season due to an efficient offense and a strong defense. They average 79.0 points per game and 45.6 percent from the field (35.7% 3pt). On defense, they allow 67.1 points per game and 43.4 percent from the field (32.9% 3pt).
It may be a surprise for casual college basketball fans to see the South Carolina Gamecocks ranked in the top 25 but head coach Frank Martin has turned this program around. Martin is known for tough minded teams that do not budge on defense.
The Gamecocks are one of the top defensive teams in the country allowing only 59.8 PPG, 36.4 FG% and 27.9 3-PT%. The Gamecocks are also third in the nation at forcing turnovers with the opposition turning the ball over 25% of their possessions.
The Gamecocks’ last loss was December 30 versus Memphis and enter this game with a (14-3) record as well. Leading this team in scoring this season for South Carolina is Sindarius Thornwell, with 18.0 PPG and 7.1 RPG and PJ Dozier (14.9 PPG; 4.8 RPG).
- Florida is 6-1 ATS in their last seven games following an ATS loss
- 5-2 ATS in their last seven games versus a team with a winning straight-up record
- Florida is also 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall
- South Carolina is 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games following an ATS loss
- 5-1 ATS in their last six Wednesday games
- Gamecocks are 15-6-1 ATS in their last 22 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600
- Gamecocks are 21-10-1 ATS in their last 32 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record
I think the edge goes to South Carolina in this matchup. The Gamecocks have Thornwell back from suspension and they have gone (3-1 ATS) since his return. The Gamecocks defense and home court edge is enough to counter the Gators offense.
