Washington Nationals
vs Philadelphia Phillies

Game Time: Tuesday May 31, 7:05pm EST
Odds: Nationals -120, O/U 7

The Washington Nationals escaped a Game 1 comeback by the Phillies and managed to hold onto a 4-3 win.  The Phillies starter Jeremy Helickson pitched well and left the game in the 7th inning with a 2-1 lead but was let down by his bullpen which gave up 3 runs in the 8th inning.

Game 2 starters: Joe Ross (4-4, 2.52 ERA) for the Nats and Aaron Nola (4-3, 2.86 ERA) for the Phils.

Philadelphia leads the season series 4-3 due to a 3 game sweep in late April.  However, the Phillies young arms have shown some signs of fatigue lately and they clearly lack run support with very few offensive threats.  Aaron Nola is one of the Phillies best young arms and while he doesn’t over power hitters, his off speed pitches are the keys to his success.   He has faced Washington twice this year. On April 28 in D.C., he took a no-decision despite allowing no runs and two hits over seven innings in his best outing of the year. Philly would score three ninth-inning runs to win 3-0. On April 16 home, Nola was roughed up for seven runs and seven hits in five innings in his worst start of 2016. Bryce Harper hits him well, going 6-for-10 with two  homers and four RBIs.

Joe Ross pitched in Philadelphia on April 15 and got the win, allowing no runs and three hits over 7.2 innings. That’s his longest — and best — start of the year.  Ross ended a 4 game losing streak his last outing vs the Cardinals, giving up one run and six hits over seven innings.  The Nats were picked by many experts to represent the NL East in the playoffs and they have a very good chance considering they are leading the pack after Memorial Day.  Teams in 1st place leading on Memorial Day have a much greater chance of making the post season.  Washington’s biggest weakness is their bullpen but they have one of the top rotations in baseball and the reigning MVP, Bryce Harper.
