Giants vs Cowboys Spread, Total & Prediction 9-11-2016 – Sports Picks Forum
New York Giants head coach, Ben McAdoo, has some big shoes to fill after Tom Coughlin stepped down after 12 seasons. One player who has clearly flourished under the guidance of Ben McAdoo is Eli Manning. Manning had two of his best statistical seasons for the Giants since McAdoo arrived in 2014. Over the last two years, Manning was ranked third in the NFL in touchdowns (65) and sixth in passing yards (8,842). In 2015, he threw for a career high 35 touchdowns while setting franchise records in attempts (618) and completions (387).
Benefiting largely from Manning’s recent play is Odell Beckham Jr. He has been spectacular for the Giants the past two seasons, racking up 187 catches, 2,755 yards and 25 touchdowns. Those mind-blowing numbers rank second, first, and fourth in NFL history, respectively.
On defense, the Giants underwent a massive makeover and handed out almost $200 million in contracts to free agents. Defensive end Olivier Vernon is turning out to be every bit the pass rusher the Giants hoped he’d be and defensive tackle Damon Harrison has teamed with Johnathan Hankins to make running up the middle against the Giants almost impossible. The Giants improved their secondary, adding Janoris Jenkins at cornerback and rookie Darian Thompson at safety.
New York Giants 2015 Trends
4-3 ATS on the road
3-3 ATS against the NFC East
Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are once again embarking on a season without Tony Romo. One move the Cowboys made during the 2015 NFL Draft was to draft QB Dak Prescott out of Mississippi State. The rookie will fill in for Romo, who will be out 6-10 weeks.
Prescott completed 78 percent of his passes for 454 yards and five touchdowns in preseason. As a senior college in the spread offense, he completed 66.2 percent of his passes for 3,793 yards, with 29 touchdowns and only five interceptions. Impressive numbers although he wasn’t highly regarded coming out of college.
The Cowboys have one of the top offensive lines in the NFL which will greatly increase Dak Prescott’s chances for survival. The Cowboys also drafted RB Ezikiel Elliot out of Ohio State. Elliot was the top running back coming out of college and should prosper in this offense.
The biggest concern for the Cowboys, besides missing Romo, will be their defense. In 2015, the Cowboys ranked 29th in scoring differential with -6.2 points per game. Some against the spread numbers from last season; 4-11 overall, 1-6 at home, 2-4 in the division. In preseason there wasn’t any improvement as they went 1-3 against the spread.
Giants vs Cowboys Prediction
The Giants have lost each of their last five season openers, three of which have come against the Dallas Cowboys. This season opener will be different. New York invested heavily in their defense and it will pay off in this game. The Giants D will put a lot of pressure on the rookie QB and force Dak to beat them. A healthy Giants team will pick up a Week 1 win in Dallas.
