ATS Experts Free NBA Spread Pick by Carmine Luzetti
We’re tipping off the week with a free NBA spread pick on the Charlotte Hornets vs Indiana Pacers. Charlotte had their three game win streak snapped with a 116-105 road loss to the Cavaliers Saturday night. Indiana rallied for a 118-111 win at home over the Trail Blazers Saturday night. Indiana holds a 60-40 advantage in the all-time regular season series between the teams but the Hornets won the last four matchups.
The Hornets don’t have a bonafide superstar player but they still can score points and currently rank 14th in the league averaging 104.7 PPG. Some areas the Hornets do stand out is they rank 4th in rebounding with 46.1 boards per game and is 6th in assists with 23.6 per contest. The Hornets are 10th in scoring defense, allowing just 101.9 points per game. Kemba Walker leads the team with 23.6 points while dishing out five assists and collecting 1.5 steals per game. Walker is having a break out year and is one of the hardest players to guard and as we saw in college, he wants the ball in crunch time.
The Hornets get a lot from their center duo of Cody Zeller and Frank Kaminsky. Their individual numbers don’t catch your eye but combined they are essentially 20 and 10. The Pacers are shooting the ball well this season hitting on 45.7% from the field and 36.4% from three ranking in the Top 10 in each area.
Indiana has played some roller coaster basketball beating the Clippers twice within three games but also losing the lowly Mavericks on Friday night. The Pacers are 11th in the league in scoring with 105 points a night. One area of concern playing the Hornets will be rebounding as the Pacers are 26th in the NBA collecting 42.3 boards per game. Indiana also lacks on the defensive side of the court, ranking 25th in the league in scoring defense, allowing 107.6 points per game. Paul George leads the Pacers with 21.8 points plus 7.2 boards a game and Myles Turner (14.7 points, 7.3 boards, 2.22 blocks) is a solid presence down low.
On paper, Indian has some nice players lead by Paul George but they aren’t a compete team yet and seem to be missing some pesky defensive players. Charlotte is a more defensive oriented team and has the ability to make teams grind out possessions and that style doesn’t really mesh with Indiana’s strengths.
- Charlotte is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 Monday games
- Charlotte is 14-5 ATS in their last 19 games following a straight up loss of more than 10 points
- Charlotte is 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game
- Charlotte is 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 vs. NBA Central
I like the gritty style of play with these Charlotte Hornets and they are an up and coming team in the NBA. There is nothing sexy about this team but they get every ounce of effort out of their players and they will use a solid defensive effort to cover the spread vs the Pacers.
