How to Bet on MLB Baseball

How to Bet Baseball: MLB Betting 101It’s one of the most common questions we get from new members or people that are new to baseball betting: how do I bet MLB baseball and what are the keys to winning?  Read below for a brief overview from Documented Handicappers on how to bet America’s pastime.

A lot of new MLB bettors may get confused when it comes to MLB odds and the difference between spreads, money lines and Totals.  MLB is in full swing so here is a short tutorial to help you understand how to bet on baseball.

Betting the Moneyline

Betting money lines are more common in MLB betting along with the total.  The odds are usually in your favor and can range from +100 to -150 and higher.  Typically sharps will stay away from betting games with higher than -150 odds.  What this means is that you would have to wager $150 to win $100.  Betting money lines helps you sustain a bankroll over the long MLB season where you can control the juice you pay out to the sports books.

Here is an example of a money line odds:

Kansas City Royals +100

Cleveland Indians -110

Betting the Spread Line

The spread line is essentially a combination of the point spread and the money line rolled into one. The run line uses a constant spread of 1.5 runs, although on very rare occasions you may see it jump to 2.5 runs. The team that is favored on the money line will also be the favored team on the run line. Betting the run like makes sense when you like a big favorite and can get them at reduced odds by giving the 1.5 runs.

Here is an example of a run line:

St. Louis Cardinals -1.5 (runs) +105

New York Mets +1.5 (runs) -125

Betting MLB Totals or the Over/Under

MLB totals or Over/Unders are just like other sports.  You are betting whether the final score of the game (total) will go over or under a specified number.  Extra innings in baseball does count towards the total.  So if you placed a bet on the Over 8.5 and the score is tied 4-4 heading into extra innings, ultimately the game will go over 8.5.

Here is an example of MLB Over/Under

San Francisco Giants @ Colorado Rockies

Under 10 (-115)

Over 10 (-105)

Hopefully this gives you a better understanding of how to bet on baseball and you can now bet MLB with confidence when stepping up to the ticket window.  Our MLB handicappers will always give you one pick on the above wagers so you can always ask our advice if you are ever confused.
