Tennessee vs Virginia Tech Game Preview & Prediction by Oddsboard.com
#14 Tennessee Volunteers (1-0)
Bristol Motor Speedway plays host to an exciting matchup and venue Saturday night at8pm EST. They are expecting close to 150,000 fans in attendance and you can guarantee this will be the largest crowd these players have played in front of in their careers. Game time jitters may be an understatement.
The Vols are coming off a week 1 win over Appalachian State, 20-13. While they won SU they failed to cover the large -21.5 point spread. The game also fell Under 58.5. It’s tough to say whether or not this Tennessee team took Appalachian State too lightly or they simply didn’t run their entire playbook to expose their plays to Virginia Tech? Regardless, the Vols got the win but now they face a tough Virginia Tech team in front of a monster crowd.
QB Joshua Dobbs didn’t exactly light it up and showed some signs of rust. Dobbs was 16 for 29, 192 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.
The Volunteers had to overcome a 10-point deficit at halftime and it appeared they were giving way to a shocking defeat but they bounced back in the 2nd half. Impressive win? No, but a good team like Tennessee will face tough challenges throughout the season and it should have prepared them for Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech Hokies (1-0)
Virginia Tech enters week 2 (1-0) after a win over visiting Liberty, 36-13. Virginia Tech QB Jerod Evans had a great outing, logging 221 passing yards and four touchdowns to get new Head Coach Justin Fuente his first win.
A big key to Virginia Tech winning will be their ability to run the football. The running game was able to spread out the wealth and get several parts involved with ten Hokies getting carries vs Liberty. The Hokies have plenty of skill players which you can expect to touch the football on Saturday night.
An area of concern was the Hokies pass rush for Liberty. They weren’t really able to get a lot of pressure against an FCS offensive line so they will have their work cut out for them banging helmets vs a big, physical SEC offensive line.
Virginia Tech vs Tennesse Prediction
The Volunteers are 4-0 ATS versus a team with a winning record, and 4-0 ATS in their last four neutral site games. Tennessee is also 1-4 ATS in their last five versus the ACC, and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, Virginia Tech is 1-4 ATS in their last five versus the SEC, and 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine neutral-site games. The Hokies are also 7-17-2 ATS in their last 26 non-conference games, and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games on grass.
The Hokies have plenty of skill players to compete against Tennessee. The Vols are the better team but we’ll take the +11 points and feel confident the Hokies keep it close enough to cover the spread.
Virginia Tech vs Tennesse Pick: Virginia Tech +11
