Just when the season outlook was gloomy for the Oklahoma Sooners, losing 2 of 3 to start the season, they rattle off 7 straight wins. Saturday night they take on the West Virginia Mountaineers in one of the rowdiest college atmospheres in the nation.
Baker Mayfield has played extremely well throwing for 33 touchdowns to 7 interceptions and over 3,200 yards in the air. The Oklahoma Sooners ground game is averaging 219.3 yards per contest and Joe Mixon leads the way with 937 yards and six touchdowns. Defensively, Oklahoma is allowing 30.8 points and 429.5 yards per game. The achilles heel of this OU team has been the defense which gives up 429 yards per game (81st), allowing 297 passing yards (121st) but they have been decent stopping the run allowing 132 rushing yards per game which ranks them 30th in the country. Oklahoma’s offense has compensated well for their defense, scoring 44 PPG, averaging over 557 yards per contest, 313 YPG in the air to 219 on the ground.
West Virginia looks to build on their (8-1 SU) record and (5-0 SU at home). The Mountaineers went into Austin last weekend and pulled out a 24-20 win and covered the -1 point spread. Their only loss on the season came at Oklahoma State on 10/29 losing 37-20. On the season, West Virginia averages 496 total yards per game, 285 passing yards and 211 rushing yards, scoring on average 32 points per game. The Mountaineers concede on average, 20 PPG ranking them 19th in the country.
The question is whether Oklahoma is for real and they have rebounded from their early season letdowns? The Sooners are 1-4 ATS their last 5 road games and 0-5 ATS their last 5 games following an ATS win.
Big game Bob Stoops on the road? I’m not convinced. West Virginia hasn’t beaten a ranked team since 2014 but Morgantown at night is one of the toughest places in the country to win. Milan Puskar Stadium is going to be rocking and the WVU players on both sides of the ball will respond. I look for West Virginia to win this game outright and snap Oklahoma’s winning streak.
