The AL East leading Baltimore Orioles will host the AL West leading Texas Rangers tonight for game 2 of their 3 game series.
Texas has the best record in the American League with a 62 wins – 45 losses. At the trade deadline they decided it was a good year to go all in on making a run towards the World Series.
The Rangers picked up Carlos Beltran from the Yankees and Jonathan Lucroy from the Brewers. Both players were hot commodities at the deadline and will most certainly help their offense. The biggest question is whether the Rangers have the pitching depth needed to make a deep run in the playoffs. But for tonight, they usher out their ace.
Cole Hamels will make his 22nd start of the season, aiming for his fourth straight win. Hamels was terrific in his latest outing, holding the Royals to just two runs in eight innings, notching his 12th win. The veteran left hander is having an outstanding season, sporting a 12-2 record with a 2.84 ERA.
The Orioles will counter with Kevin Gausman, a 25 year old who has thrown quality starts in two of his last three outings. Gausman (2-8, 4.18 ERA) is coming off one of his worst starts of the year, allowing three home runs and six earned runs in a loss against Toronto. He pitched against Texas on June 20, and allowed four earned runs over five innings in a loss.
The Orioles offense has been quiet for their standards as of late, Chris Davis has been in a slump and has only recorded one RBI in his last 14 games , while Manny Machado only has five RBI’s in his last 20 games. Machado has his average around the .330 mark, however he is now hitting .303 with 22 home runs and 58 RBI’s on the season. The Orioles have scored three runs or less in five out of their last seven games and are now averaging 4.73 runs per game.
