Red Sox vs Orioles Free MLB Pick, 8-17-2016
Where: Camden Yards
When: Wednesday, August 17, 7:05pm EST
Line: Boston Red Sox (-125), Baltimore Orioles (+115); total: 9
The Red Sox managed to win game 1 by scoring 2 runs in the 8th inning to win 5-3. Mookie Betts took control of this game going 2-4, hitting 2 home runs and accounting for all 5 RBI’s. Betts has been a beast this season batting .315, 28 HR’s and 89 RBI’s. A key piece to this Red Sox offense is David Ortiz. It’s hard to believe Big Pappi plans to retire after the 2016 season considering he is batting .313, 122 hits, 27 home runs, 92 RBI’s with a .621 slugging %. Clearly he is still one of the best hitters in baseball. He may want to reconsider his retirement.
About the Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore boasts some pretty big hitters as well. Manny Machado has logged 140 hits with 81 runs, 26 homers and 69 RBI. Adam Jones has 126 hits with 70 runs and 70 RBI with 23 homers. Jonathan Schoop has hit 125 times with 62 runs and 62 RBI.
About the Starting Pitchers
David Price is (10-8) on the season and it’s nearly impossible to create expectations of pitcher making $30 million a year but two games above .500 is not what the Red Sox envisioned. Price has struggled at times and dominant at others. Price was signed to sure up the #1 spot in the Boston rotation but he is far from the ace this season. Rick Porcello is (16-3, 3.33 ERA) and Steven Wright is (13-5, 3.01 ERA). If the Red Sox make the post season they may want to slate Price as the #2 or #3 starter considering his post season struggles.
Dylan Bundy gets moved up a day to fill in for Chris Tillman who is having shoulder discomfort. Bundy has pitched well and is riding a streak of three straight wins and breezed through 5 2/3 innings at San Francisco on Friday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks. The Oklahoma native is making his first career start against Boston and allowed two runs and 10 hits spread across four previous relief appearances against the Red Sox.
Red Sox vs Orioles Free Pick & Final Analysis
The Red Sox may want to consider limiting David Price’s pitch count heading down the stretch. Price has made over 98 pitches in 9 of his last 10 games and over 100 pitches in 8 of those games. Price has been a trade piece over the past 3 seasons going from Tampa Bay to Detroit to Toronto and signing with Boston in the off season. Each team getting their monies worth but you have to wonder when his left arm goes dead. Or maybe it already has? His last 3 starts he has given up 10 runs over 20 innings. This is very concerning for the Red Sox.
