Washington controlled its own destiny heading into Week 15. Then Monday night happened. The Redskins turned in a stinker in just about every department during a 26-15 loss to the Panthers. It could have been worse, but Carolina had to settle for five field-goal attempts–four of which were made by Graham Gano. Quarterback Kirk Cousins and the offense endured their most three-and-outs of the season while rushing for a mere total of 29 yards. Needing to air it out because his team played from behind the entire game, Cousins finished 32-of-47 for 315 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

Tight end Jordan Reed played through a shoulder injury but left early–not because of physical problems, but after being ejected for throwing a punch at Panthers’ safety Kurt Coleman. Reed had one catch for six yards and most likely will have limited playing time in tonight’s game with his banged up shoulder.

Their losing season – If the Bears lose to the Redskins and then to the Vikings, they will finish a season with fewer than four wins for the first time in a non-strike year since the NFL’s schedule expanded to 16 games in 1978. They have gone 4-12 three times, most recently in 2002. Chicago has not finished with three wins or less in a full season since 1973 (3-11).

If there is any good news, it is that the Bears have at least managed to be competitive in 2016. They have lost two games in a row by three points and six of their 11 losses have come by no more than seven points. Wide receiver Eddie Royal will miss the final two games because of a toe injury. Royal is the 18th player on the 2016 roster to be placed on injured reserve. He caught 33 passes for 369 yards this season after finishing with 37 receptions for 238 yards and one score last year.

As bad as Washington was on Monday, there is not much reason to think that Chicago will emerge from its doldrums. Royal’s absence will not help a team that is down to its third-string quarterback in Matt Barkley. Although Barkley has been serviceable, he has not exactly been setting the world on fire. Now needing a win in the worst way because of their Monday night loss and Green Bay’s current hot streak, the ‘Skins should be playing with a renewed fire this weekend.

The Redskins are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 overall, 8-2 ATS in their last 10 on the road, 8-3 ARS in their last 11 against losing opponents, and 6-2 ATS in their last eight following a loss. Chicago is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 after allowing more than 350 yards in its previous outing, 0-4 ATS in the last five meetings between the two teams, and 0-5 ATS in its last five at home against Washington. Look for those trends to continue.
