A Thanksgiving afternoon NFC East matchup pits the Washington Redskins vs East leading Dallas Cowboys. This is my pick for game of the day and it should be an exciting matchup just like history indicates.
The Washington Redskins have won five of their last seven road games behind QB Kirk Cousins. Cousins is completing 67.2 percent of his passes for 3,091 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Washington has the 2nd ranked overall offense averaging over 418 yards per game which includes 117 yards on the ground. The ‘Skins average just north of 25 PPG and they are good at controlling the clock, averaging 31:38 per game.
Defensively the Redskins would benefit from better play as they currently rank 23rd allowing 371 YPG and concede 23 points per game. Washington is equally bad defending the rush allowing 112 YPG ranking them 22nd. The defense will be the biggest contributor to the outcome and whether or not they can contain Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot.
Dallas is playing in a dream scenario with a padded lead a top the NFC East and 9 wins before Thanksgiving all without Tony Romo. No one predicted the contributions Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot would have made before the start of the season but it’s safe to say the Cowboys have dynamic tandem for years to come.
Dak Prescott is completing 67.7 percent of his passes for 2,640 yards, 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions. His smart decisions and poise put him in the position to un-seed Romo as the starting quarterback. Ezekiel Elliott leads the rushing attack with 1,102 yards and nine touchdowns. Both players are early season MVP candidates but their success would not be possible without the tremendous play of the offensive line.
Dallas’ offensive line ranks 1st in pass block and run block. Their enormous line paves the wave for this offense and is the real reason for the Cowboys success.
How does this game play out?
The Redskins are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Cowboys are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 9-0 ATS in their last 9 games overall. The Redskins are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 meetings in Dallas and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings overall.
Washington always plays Dallas well and the added excitement on a national spotlight, Thanksgiving Day game will be no exception. However, the Skins can be picked apart in the secondary, especially in the middle of the field. The over looks like a pretty good pick as well, but have to keep going with red-hot Cowboys to cover. I think this train keeps moving forward and they’ll have the offense to cover this touchdown spread.
Redskins vs Cowboys NFL Expert Prediction: Dallas Cowboys -6.5
