The short NBA preseason is over and the 2016-17 is set to tip off tonight. One of our featured matchups brings the San Antonio Spurs to Oracle Arena to take on the Golden State Warriors. The Spurs said good bye to an all time legend as Tim Duncan gracefully retired from the NBA. San Antonio brought in Pau Gasol to fill the power forward position.
Golden State may have spent the off season licking their wounds after letting the Cleveland Cavaliers come from behind to win the NBA Finals. Instead, they went out and got the most coveted free agent in Kevin Durant. Does this move make the Warriors a prohibitive favorite to win the 2017 NBA Finals? Our ATS Experts certainly think so but let’s focus on tonight’s game since there is a long season ahead.
San Antonio has one of the most underrated players in the game in Kawhi Leonard. A consensus top defensive player he is getting so good at offense you can make an argument that he is one of the top 3 players in the game. Once Lamarcus Aldridge got comfortable he started to look like his old self last year. He can be a dangerous scorer for stretches but despite his size he is not the rebounder and defender you want from the post.
Bringing in KD makes this group the latest “Super Team”. They are definitely going to be super when they have the ball on offense but you have to wonder how they will be defensively and if they will need some time to get used to playing together. It took the Miami Heat a couple of years to get used to playing together and often times teams with a number of All World players will back fire. KD doesn’t seem like an ego that will ruin this team’s chemistry. They should have no issues scoring but they will need to play better defense than they did in the Finals.
The addition of Durant should open up a ton of three-point opportunities for the ‘Splash Brothers’, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry. Draymond Green won’t have to serve as the primary defender on a nightly basis anymore, which should give him the legs to be more effective later on in the year.
The Under is:
- 5-0 in Spurs last 5 Tuesday games
- 5-1 in Spurs last 6 vs. NBA Pacific
- 4-0-1 in Warriors last 5 home games
- 5-1 in the last 6 meetings
Golden State should be able to pull out an opening night victory at home. KD brings a lot of excitement and the crowd will surely be into this game. The Spurs and Warriors always play competitive games, and this one figures to be on the lower-scoring end of the spectrum. This is the first game of the year so players will be looking for their shot. San Antonio’s defense will limit the Warriors enough to sneak under the 212 total on Tuesday night.
