Two top 10 ranked SEC programs will face off Saturday afternoon at Kyle Field in College Station, TX. Tennessee was supposed to compete this season in the SEC but we have seen a Jekyll and Hyde team that has scraped and clawed to get to (5-0). Texas A&M was not ranked in most preseason top 25 polls but have been impressive so far this season.
Oklahoma transfer, QB Trevor Knight, has played well for the Aggies throwing for 1261 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions through five games. The senior QB has really brought a new dimension to this offense that has propelled this team to a #8 ranking. Freshman RB Trayveon Williams has turned some heads early on rushing for 487 yards with four touchdowns. Williams will be one to watch against the Vols defense as he is averaging an astounding 9 yards per carry.
Overall the Aggies defense has faced a few strong offenses and did a good job stopping their run, so it will be interesting to see how they fare against a strong Tennessee team. The Aggies are now allowing an average of 15.4 points per game, ranking them 12th overall.
The Volunteers have been made for an exciting team to watch this season. Last weekend, Georgia scored a touchdown with 12 seconds left to take the lead but Tennessee QB Josh Dobbs tossed a Hail Mary that was caught by Jauan Jennings for the game winning touchdown with no time left on the clock. This team has a lot of resolve coming from behind after an early 14-0 deficit vs Virginia Tech, a 21-3 halftime deficit vs Florida and now a late second TD to defeat Georgia. Bettors are just (2-2 ATS) for those backing the Vols. Overall, the Volunteers defense has been solid, conceding an average of 23 points per game, ranking them 46th overall.
Here’s why I am backing Tennessee: the Vols have played just about every game close and have proven they can come back from early deficits. A team that has the strength mentally and physically to fight back to victory, is a dangerous team. Given the styles and defenses, this game could be low scoring but both teams have shown they can turn it on in the second half. The Vols are 6-1 ATS L7 vs a team with a winning record and 6-2 ATS L8 vs the SEC. The Aggies are just 1-5 ATS L6 games following an ATS loss and 8-18 ATS L26 games vs the SEC.
This has the makings of another wild, close finish and I like the fight in Tennessee to keep this one close which is why I am taking the +7 points and backing the Vols.
