Toledo vs Akron Free Pick by David Price of BetSheet.com
(6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS)
Toledo had expectations of rolling into their showdown with Western Michigan on Nov. 25 unbeaten in MAC play. This will not be the case now after their stunning road loss to Ohio. The Rockets’ defense faltered in a surprising 31-26 defeat that is the team’s first in MAC conference action.
Their mindset must change as they take to the road again to face the Akron Zips. Akron won the last meeting between the schools in 2013, 31-29. On the season, Toledo is averaging 197.2 yards rushing and 347.1 yards passing. A big part of their loss on Saturday was their inability to get the running game going vs Ohio. Senior tailback Kareem Hunt has rushed for 790 yards on the season but was held to just 50 yards vs Ohio.
One of the bright spots in their loss was Logan Woodside threw for 438 yards and three touchdowns against Ohio. Woodside has emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation and he will be slinging the ball vs this Akron defense that is allowing 34.2 points and 483.1 yards per game.
The Akron Zips look for their third home victory and to become bowl eligible for the second straight season. However, the Zips will need to bounce back from a bad loss on the road to Buffalo. One of the big issues for the Zips is their defense as they allowed 500 yards for the 5th time this season. It won’t get any easier facing this explosive Toledo offense.
Akron’s offense averages 400 YPG but they produced just 300 in their loss to Buffalo and gave up 518 yards. Akron failed to stop the run, once again, ranking them 112th in the nation, giving up 228.7 yards per game on the ground.
With the loss, Akron fell to 3-2 in the MAC but are currently 2nd in the MAC East behind Ohio.
Toledo vs Akron Pick & Prediction
What is David Price Predicting?
Toledo is the better team and while it’s tough to go on the road in the MAC on weekdays, the Rockets have not lost two straight games this season for a reason. Woodside and Hunt will put up big numbers against a suspect Akron defense, that struggled against a bad Buffalo offense.
The Rockets are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 road games and 17-5-2 ATS in their last 24 games overall.
I think the Rockets will be motivated to put up a big win on the road to get back in the W column and keep their post season goals alive.
