A big ACC matchup between the #12 Virginia Cavaliers vs the #14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish tips off Tuesday night in South Bend, Ind. The 12th ranked Virginia Cavaliers won their 4th straight game and improved to 15-3 (5-2 ACC) on the season after defeating the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 62-49, this past Saturday. The 14th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish improved to 17-3 (6-1 ACC) on the season after being the Syracuse Orange, 84-66.
Virginia sits 1 game behind the Irish for 3rd place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia is (10-6 ATS) on the season while the Fighting Irish are (10-3-1 ATS).
The Cavaliers are an outstanding defensive team and rank 1st in the country allowing 53.2 PPG to their opposition and their 23 defensive RPG rank them 8th. UVA is not a great offensive team scoring 69.6 PPG but their defense is their trademark and the reason they are ranked #12. This defense will be tested by the Irish offense.
Notre Dame has 4 starters that enter this game with a double digit scoring average and as a result, as a team, they average 81 PPG. The Irish can pour it on from beyond the arc and average 10 3-pointers per game and have made 200 shots from 3-point range. Defensively, Notre Dame is allowing their opponents to average 67.5 PPG on 40.7% shooting from the field.
The Cavaliers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 27-11 ATS in their last 38 games as an underdog. The Fighting Irish are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games as a favorite and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games as a home favorite.
Notre Dame has won 8 of their last 9 games and have been great on both sides of the ball this season and are a perfect 12-0 at home. Virginia’s defense has been tremendous but I favor Notre Dame by a small margin at home. The Irish will be able to feed off the home crowd and their 3-point range makes the difference in this game.
