Preview and Prediction by Jimmy Lawrence of Oddsboard.com
Starting Pitcher: Lucas Giolito (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Two NL East rivals clash Thursday night to begin a 4 game series at Citi Field. The Nationals want what the Mets won last season, an NL Pennant. Washington’s competition in the NL East is thin but the biggest hurdle they need to overcome is their streaky play.
Dusty Baker gives the ball to Lucas Giolito tonight to make his 2nd career start. The young right hander had a solid 3.17 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP to go along with a 5-3 record in 71 innings pitched at Triple-A this season.
Daniel Murphy has hit well against most teams this season and that includes the Mets. The Nationals 2nd baseman is 15 for 35 good for a .429 average, to go along with four home runs and 11 RBI’s in nine games played against New York. Murphy has 6 RBI’s in his last seven games and is now hitting .349 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI’s on the season. The Mets clearly miss Murphy’s production at the plate.
New York Mets
Starting Pitcher: Bartolo Colon (7-4, 2.87 ERA)
Bartolo Colon continues to defy age. The 43 year old right hander is (7-4) on the season with a 2.87 ERA. Colon has done a great job at stranding runners this season, posting an 82.5% LOB Percentage, ranking him seventh of any pitcher. He has faced the Nationals twice this season, allowing four runs in 11.2 innings pitched and now has a 3.15 ERA to go along with a 4-6 record in 65.2 career innings pitched against the Nats.
New York’s biggest problem is their lack of offensive production. The Mets are averaging 3.83 runs per game, ranking them down at 28th overall, and are hitting .239 as a team. The New York pitching is what wins them ball games, featuring a 3.36 team ERA, ranking them third in the Majors.
The Mets are similar to the Nats as they both are streaky. Lately they have been hot having won six of seven after downing the Marlins 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Washington is 1-7 in their last 8 road games and are 7-3 in their last 10 overall. The Mets are 7-1 in their last 8 home games and the under is 7-3-2 in Colon’s last 12 home starts. The under is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings in New York . Colon pitches well at home, posting a 2.68 ERA at Citi Field so I think he can contain the Nationals offense.
Taking the Mets in this matchup with Colon on the hill facing off vs a rookie pitcher the Mets have faced. I expect the Mets hitters to make some adjustments vs Giolito and Colon to stifle the Nats hitters enough to notch the win.
